The Gifts Of A Small Space
Downsizing and living in a small space isn't for everyone, but I have to say it has changed my life! It's been a little over a month and I just love my new small space. What makes the cottage so inviting is that it has the illusion of spaciousness with its vaulted ceilings, beams and lots of natural light from large windows.
Every day I look out to beautifully maintained gardens and lawn that only require my appreciation and gratitude no effort on my part. No more guilt about not being able to weed and water my many gardens! That is worth its weight in gold to me.
There has only been one moment of letting go regret—so far. I went to pull out an old favorite summer jacket and realized that in my "letting go sweep" I had donated it! Yes, another casualty from the infamous "What If's…", but I found a wonderful substitute!
Storage has not been as much of a challenge as I thought it might be. I'm learning to function with only two large closets—not walk-ins—for all my clothes and a small linen closet. I kept most of my furniture some of which serves as good storage. Last week my mother's newly refurbished antique cedar hope chest made its grand entrance into the cottage. It had been sitting in my basement for four years, so before I moved I sent it out to be refinished. It's a great storage piece, too.
The advantages of having a smaller space; there's less to clean, vacuuming takes me about twenty minutes as opposed to over an hour, everything is within reach, I have everything that is important for life to be comfortable and functional and I have more time to devote to business, socializing and me time!
My life is definitely simpler here at the cottage in the country. Letting go of my home of seventeen years has been a huge transition, but one that will lead me to new people, places and experiences. I keep thinking about A New View's theme—"2009 The Year of Letting Go!" What's next? Stay tuned…
Do you have a downsizing story? Are you moving? Let us know!
Love To You,
Maggie
