IT'S ANNA DAY!

As night neared and bedtime approached the kids went into their normal bedtime bathroom routine of teeth brushing, etc. There it was again on the mirror – the "Anna Day Tomorrow!" sign. Groans and complaints would often waft down the stairs, "Oh darn, now I have to pick up my room for Anna, the cleaning lady!

The expectation was to get things off the floor and dresser tops so that vacuuming and dusting could take place by our weekly cleaning person who's name was Anna.  She was a delight and a terrific cleaner.  Being an energetic and godly woman she would enter the house with a burst of energy and friendly chatter (if I was home at the time), don her headphones so she could stay energized for the task by the sweet sounds of Twila Paris (one of her favorite Christian artists), and begin to pray her way around our house as she performed her acts of labor and love.

It was great to come home to a fresh clean smell in the house and the sense of new cleanliness and order.  While it lasted it was great and appreciated by all who lived there.
Or, maybe I should say, almost all who lived there.

During our children's teen years our family hosted exchange students from four different countries – Germany, Brazil, Mexico, and Canada to be exact.  They quickly learned what the signs on the bathroom mirror once a week meant.  Like it or not, they all complied, somewhat, with Mom's favorite day of the week.

One day our German "son" came home from school after an "Anna Day" had taken place.  He quickly came running down the stairs from his room exclaiming, "What has Anna done with my tennis racquet? I know it was on my bed when I left this morning.  It's not there and I need it now for practice with the tennis team at school!"  Calmly I explained that I was positive that Anna had not touched his tennis racquet and he should begin looking around for where he may have misplaced it."  There was no consoling him because he was sure that she had done something with it.

It's been many years now since that day and "Anna Day's" in general.  I've never confessed to any of the children that I knew exactly what happened the day Anna was being accused of hiding that tennis racquet.  She had nothing to do with it.  When the family budget needed cutting, unfortunately, Anna was one of the first to be cut.  Since the note on the mirror worked so well for Anna I thought it only fitting to keep up the tradition for "Judith Ann(a)!"  I was the cleaning lady that fateful day.  Maybe it does pay to hire cleaning help…at least for a while!

Don't leave us hanging, Judy. What had you done with the tennis racket? Did it ever turn up? (Are we lucky this didn't become an international incident?) :-)

by Judy on 9/2/2009 11:20:08 PM:

Julie, I didn't do anything with the tennis racket. He'd misplaced it but I knew that no one had touched that racket (wink, wink). I can't recall where it showed up but it was so long ago now that it's long gone from my memory bank. I should email him and ask him if he recalls that incident (but then do I have to confess?!) He's a Dr. now in German with wife and 2 children. I suspect he can't recall either. Thanks for asking and being intrigued though!
