Blog: An Organization Diet -- Lose the clutter and drop the weight
Practicing Gratitude helps with Dieting!
My sister-in-law, Kim is visiting this week from Florida. We all love it when she comes up, since we don't get to see her that often, but why is it that our diet sometimes takes a backburner to houseguests? Perhaps we feel pressed to stock the fridge, have snacks available throughout the day, fill up the days with extra little 'things to do' (like our life isn't busy enough!) and so on. Actually overnight guests offer a welcome 'break' from our regular routine life, but as for dieting…it's definitely a little bit harder.
But this is where we have to acknowledge our blessings over the course of the week. My daughter, Lexy officially turned nine years old this weekend, her god-mother, Auntie Kim comes to visit, I've kept up my early morning walks with my friend, Kristen, I made it through another week of my hip hop class, I taught two organizing workshops: Organizing Your Life and Organizing for the Holidays, which not only got me re-thinking about my own life goals but really got me into the holiday spirit already, and best of all, it's Autumn in New England (anybody who's been up to this part of the country this time of year knows exactly what I'm talking about…it's beautiful outside!).
So, whenever we feel a little overscheduled, overworked or overwhelmed…our lesson this week is to make a list of those little blessings we may have overlooked. It really puts things into perspective. Start a gratitude journal. It's one of my simple steps listed in my first book, 'SIMPLE STEPS…10 Weeks to Getting Control of Your Life'. Being grateful for what we have and where we are is also a helpful tool for dieting. We simply cannot start any kind of lifestyle change without first experiencing self acceptance and being grateful for our lives. Wipe the slate clean. Offer forgiveness for things that happened in the past. Move on with a new smile. November is starting and Thanksgiving is around the corner, offering you the perfect opportunity to start your gratitude journal. Take a small spiral notebook or blank journal and keep it on your nightstand. As part of a new nightly routine, before you go to sleep, open up your journal and write three things you are thankful for, for that day, and do this for each day thereafter. Any day that throws you challenges will become especially important to write entries into your gratitude journal. It forces you to find the positive in that day. It will help you start thinking more positively. Quite simply, anyone who keeps a gratitude journal will not be the same person after two months of writing in it daily. It's amazing how your attitude toward how you see each day will change. How much happier you will become. I've been keeping a gratitude journal for several years now and my friends will attest that I really do tend to see the silver lining in everything. Try it. By New Years Day, you will have a new outlook on life which will help you to keep your New Years Resolutions (more talk about that later on!).
And, remember to keep up those new daily habits from my previous blog posts! Create some down time for yourself each day and drink plenty of water! Find a blank journal and start looking at life through rose colored glasses. The holiday season is approaching. You'll need this!
