Paper File Archiving
The Smithsonian Institute is a well-known and established cultural icon in the U.S. with an array of museums. The institution helps to preserve history. They are known for their wide variety and collection of objects. What you may not know is that they have very well established Records Retention Guidelines.
Records Retention Guidelines provide guidance on maintaining the records of an organization from the time they are created up to their eventual disposal. This may include classifying, storing, securing, and destruction (or in some cases, archival preservation) of records.
Also, the Smithsonian publishes most of their guidelines via the web available for public review. If your company is considering establishing Record Retention Guidelines, you'll want to research your industry for legal authority related to retention. In addition, review the Smithsonian Institute's record management model. Not only does the Smithsonian publish their model, but they also explain step-by-step how it was developed.
