BE Ready, So You Don't Have to GET Ready
"BE ready, so you don't have to GET ready." I heard a preacher on the radio utter those words, and they have stuck in my mind. Now, I know the preacher was talking about being ready for something entirely different, but I couldn't help but think about how that sentence could be applied to organization:
BE organized, so you don't have to GET organized.
In fact, I uttered those words to my husband as we frantically "got ready" for people to come over during the recent Christmas holidays. I mused how wonderful it would be to "be" in such a state of reasonable cleanliness and order that we could always be ready to welcome guests into our home without the last-minute vacuuming of dog hair and stashing of paperwork-in-progress.
Yes, I confess. Martha Stewart doesn't live at my house. Maybe one day she will, but she's not here yet. And since I'm a professional organizer, I'd have to clean up before she arrived anyway, so it's best that she stays away for now.
What would our lives look like if our financial lives were "ready"? For what, exactly, would we be ready – and why would it be important not to have to "get ready"? Here a just a few thoughts about that:
If we backed up our Quicken data every time we modified it, we wouldn't have to re-create it when our computer crashed.
If we maintained an up-to-date list of our assets and liabilities, we wouldn't have to scramble to create a balance sheet the night before we applied for a new mortgage.
If we kept up-to-date listings of our financial, legal, and medical information, we could grab them and go in an emergency.
To paraphrase an old saying, an ounce of proactive financial organization is worth a pound of reactive financial organization.
BE financially organized, so you don't have to GET financially organized.
