What does your utility closet look like? Tangled extension cords mixed with light bulbs, shoe polish in a box with extra shampoo, plastic shopping bags stuffed in the corner? It may cost a little money to get organized, but the time you save looking for all your needed tools will be worth it!
Purchase those clear plastic storage boxes, preferably shoe-box size. Watch for them on sale because you may need up to thirty of them to get really organized. Most things in your utility closet will fall into categories. Group similar things in the boxes, label the outsides clearly, and list the kinds of things you placed in the boxes:
Shoe Things: include polishes, extra laces, brushes, etc.
Repair Stuff: wall plugs, light switch plates, etc.
Light Bulbs
Extra soap, toothpaste, emery boards
Tape, ribbon, strings, scissors
Boxes are also good for organizing:
First Aid
Cleaning supplies
Plastic bags (these can also be stuffed inside the tube from paper towels or inside an empty Oatmeal box). If you don't care to save plastic bags you can reuse them, toss them, or bring them to a recycle center (some stores have a receptacle for them to be deposited in.)
If you store mops and brooms in your utility closet, buy clamps and attach them to the wall. You can also buy special holders to hang irons and ironing boards. The trick is to keep everything off the floor and have a place for everything. It will be easier to clean and looks much neater!
