The File Index - A Simple but Powerful Tool



Why don't people file their papers? A common reason is that people don't trust their file systems. They are fearful that they will place a paper in a file drawer and never be able to find it again.  Perhaps they have had this experience once or twice and then they lose trust in the file systems.
A simple but powerful solution to this challenge is The File Index.  The File Index is a one-page document (most likely typed up in MS Word) that lists the name of each file folder in the drawer.  It takes about 15 minutes to create and is worth every minute.  I suggest you print the page and keep it in the very front position in the file drawer.  You should also keep an electronic copy on your laptop, so that you can open the file and easily search for a particular topic, using MS Word's "Find" functionality which allows you to find certain text in the document.
