Address stress
There are 2 types of stress women face. First, there's the everyday kind – the daily commute, the computer glitch, the kids get sick, a crisis at work. For the most part we expect it and are able to manage it (hopefully).
The other kind of stress – toxic stress – leaves you constantly overwhelmed and drained. It erodes your immune system and wreaks havoc with your hormones, which can ramp up your appetite and pile on the pounds of fat in your abdominal area which makes you more vulnerable to heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
What are we saying when we talk about reducing stress? Making healthy choices is the foundation.
* Living healthy lowers your risk of depression according to a 2007 study published in the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine.
* Exercise is an active behavior, and active behaviors (versus sedentary ones) lead to a feeling of accomplishment. Studies also show that from a physical standpoint, exercise can greatly reduce anxiety. In fact, the study authors argued that workouts and clean eating (specifically a diet high in omega 3 fatty acids) can be a prescription to treat depression and anxiety.
Metabolic stress refers to hormonal imbalances that occur when the body releases both adrenaline and cortisol.
We need some cortisol to build muscle tissue, but too much can lead to a number of problems including lower immune system, weight gain (particularly increased belly fat) and general malaise.
Clean eating and working out is important to balance cortisol levels and keep them in check. You feel less stressed mentally and your body actually is less stressed – a win win for you!
Next time you're feeling crunched by the pressure of stress, get control with one of these stress busters. You'll probably never live stress free, but you can grab hold of the steering wheel and keep yourself from careening off the highway!
