Making A "Parts Box"
Moving brings on lots of pieces and parts. When you dismantle your home and disrupt your daily life, there are a lot of little parts that seem to appear. A box designated for holding them all can really help. (This is especially important for movers who will have their things in storage for any length of time.) One central location for "parts" makes it easy to find what you are looking for in one place, instead of opening 27 boxes and still not knowing where that set of hardware is!
Supplies you need to make your "Parts Box":
- Box: A box with handles and a lid works best.
- Reclosable zip baggies: Have a couple sizes on hand, like gallon and sandwich size.
- Marker: A marker made for labeling CDs and DVDs works great for this, as they write on plastic bags like a dream.
- Painters' tape: Some items will have large parts, so tape them together so they don't lose their mates. Painters' tape prevents damage and hours of cleaning off that annoying sticky residue left by other adhesives.
- "Cling" Wrap: Some bulky or odd shaped items need to be kept together. "Cling" wrap from the kitchen helps keep them together, and is fast and easy.
So, what can you use the parts box for? Here's some ideas to get you going:
- Bed frame hardware: While taking beds apart, hardware needs to be together so you can actually sleep on your bed the first night.
- Shelving hardware: Some shelving has small hardware that needs a home when taking it apart
- Art & Picture hardware: Hangers and nails in one place helps you keep track of where they are. (Another option would be to use clear packing tape and attach them to the back of the frame.)
So, round up the parts and put them in the box. One less thing to stress over in your move can really work in your favor. Happy moving!
