Where's Your Head?
Exercise and fitness gives your self-esteem a real boost. Studies have shown that the simple act of working out can improve body image, regardless of whether or not your body actually changes. This may be due in part to the effort spent on getting in shape (which researchers say could convince people to think they look better).
Improved body image extends to all areas of your life too - from career advancement, attitude, motivation, energy levels and increased self confidence. So whether you work out from home or the health club - you've got more reasons than ever to pick up those weights and strap on your running shoes!
A couple of ways to make your workouts more efficient and effective:
Plan ahead. Jot down what you plan to do for exercise each day, just like your grocery list. this keeps you focused and prevent you from either wandering aimlessly at the health club or procrastinating on what you're going to do for a workout.
Mix it up. Avoid boredom and plateauing by mixing up your routines - both cardio and resistance training. This also creates muscle confusion which helps you build size and definition fast.
Always have a Plan B. Your run gets rained out, the health club goes up in flames or you have to work late. Have some other routines at hand - an exercise dvd at home or on a cable tv channel, a fitness or yoga class to destress.
Focus on you. This is your time and your workout. Don't let the day's pressures or your to do list distract you. Concentrate on the moves, and your body - you'll get a lot more out of the time you're putting in.
