Organizing the Playroom

For almost every family the scenario is the same. Regardless of age group or content, children's toys seem unmanageable to just about everyone. Whether it is the Lego piece you are tired of stepping on or it is the rest of Polly Pocket's accessories that cannot be found that keep your family in turmoil. They seem to always have a long list ready of what is coming up next. So, take an opportunity to streamline what toys you have on hand. They key to success is simplifying. Unless a child's play area is established and maintained where they can have access to all the various components of that particular type of play, they will be less likely to play with all of their toys. But kids also like to lend a hand. They are eager to please and want to take pride in their space. It is also an excellent opportunity to allow them practice of particular skills such as counting, sorting and grouping. Not to mention the act of charity through donating their unwanted toys. As far as maintenance proper editing is the most important part of establishing control. So let us look at a few ways that a well organized playroom can be established with a custom system for your family. 1.Tackle the toys. Separate all toys into categories such as blocks, cars and trucks, art supplies, etc. Consider your children's interest and personality traits. If your little one likes to paint create an art center. A building block or Lego area needs a flat surface to build on. Take a nudge from preschools. They are all set up to better facilitate play with easy clean up. 2. Nothing on the floor no more it is common for playrooms to begin taking over every inch of the floor along a wall space. Just numerous containers with oddly matched toys. There is no other way, you have to sort all of that stuff too. Remove large bulky furniture that is seldom used by children to replace with bean bags chairs or more appropriately proportioned furniture pieces for your kids to have more space. 3.Sort and label. It is never too early to start teaching children the concept of grouping and matching like items together. Allowing them to stay focused and see the job through to the end is an incredible confidence booster. 4. Create homes for various categories. Most often people shop for containers before beginning their project. Most have no idea what they will use them for until they get home and realize they do not fit. Store according to age. Place open bins and use lower shelves for younger children for easy cleanup. Underbed storage, shelves, pegs and boards to keep items within easy reach. Continue placing like items together to create centers for different tasks. Put all the play food near the play kitchen and dishes. Trains near the train tracks, etc. 5.Label It! Use labels to keep items identified for your family. When everyone knows where it goes clean up should be everyone's responsibility. For younger children use photos to mark the front of bins for ID. Use bookcases and shelving to hold containers and bins with the sorted items. 6. Keep containers around the house for easy clean up. I suggest two large size canvas bins to walk around at the end of each night and pickup toys that have traveled through the house. Remember to go through the toys periodically to catch lost or broken pieces. One last tip, remember that a play room is for exactly that, for play. Do not organize to the point you stifle your children's creativity. Enjoy!
