180 Degree Thinking: You Do Need MORE and LESS
Not enough time & energy is probably the number one complaint of solopreneurs and business owners everywhere. I have yet to meet a fellow woman professional who thinks they have enough of either! There's the endless stream of emails, projects, marketing, clients, phone calls, administrative tasks – and uh, maybe a minute or two to take care of YOU?
The secret to making the most of your time without sacrificing precious energy and motivation is a technique I learned from Robert Holden's (The Happiness Project) book Success Intelligence. It's a shift in the way you think – a 180 degree shift to be exact. You see, for most of us the answer to our success comes from the concept of "more." The 180 shift challenges us to focus on the answer in two ways. While we may still need more (more energy, time, vision, inspiration, creativity) we also need a lot less (waste, unimportant tasks, obligations, commitments, stress, worry).
180 degree thinking encourages us to adopt a flexible balance between what Holden calls "the wisdom of more" and the "beauty of less."
Think about how you can combine more or less in ways that ignite your energy and decrease your stress. Identify time wasters that are draining your attention away from your purpose and priorities. Make a list of all the ways you could make your life and work easier. Could you become more organized, delegate more often, stop working weekends and build some ME time into your schedule?
You could start by rearranging your priorities so you can put you and your self-care at the top of the list. Everything we do these days is disguised as "urgent priority." If you aren't at the top, why not? What will happen to your life if you don't have the energy or health to grow it?
We continually cram and multitask in order to keep pace with our own life. Eventually our schedules and spaces become so crowded and complex, they prohibit us from accomplishing what we're trying to do. We're trying to get more done and we get slowed down. The decision to simplify is a gift. Not only does it help you increase your energy and get your "mojo" back but it welcomes in creativity, inspiration and radiant good health!
