Stuff
Stuff is a popular topic, and now it is the title of a new book getting lots of press. Stuff: Compulsive Hoarding & the Meaning of Things had a book review in the New York Times and a review in the Washington Post.
There is a recent interest in hoarding sparked by cable shows such as Hoarders on A&E. Even though when Professional Organizers get together we do not always agree with the approaches used to help the hoarders, in general I think the show is positive in the boarder sense because it educates people that hoarding is more common than you think. When people say the word "hoarder," folks know what you're talking about. It also allows family members of hoarders to be more comfortable talking about this subject, knowing that they are not alone in this challenge.
Note, if you google the word Stuff, you will also get a reference to the Anne Leonard video "The Story of Stuff." If you have 20 minutes, it is worth your time to watch it. It is not related to hoarding, but it is about how our obsession and relationship to stuff affects the world's entire eco-system. I've shared it with many clients and they have found it thought-provoking.
