Travel with the younger set
Travel with children has many advantages. Their heightened awareness and here and now approach has much to teach us. When a child is hungry and tired, it does not matter where you are, that child wants attention, and now. So the pleasure of a child's company brings with it added responsibilities and requires forethought and attention to details make for a smooth and pleasurable trip for all. Lasting positive memories are an added reward.
Pause before beginning packing and make a list of what each member of the group needs to get through the day, including medications. If it is an extended trip, are laundry facilities available? Do not over pack. If kids are old enough for input, ask what clothing they would like to wear. Kids can learn to simplify and plan from an early age.
Anything that entertains, comforts and enhances learning is great for any traveler, but keep it simple. Pack a small box of crayons and paper rather that the largest. Bring a couple of toys and books, not the whole toy box. If you can begin early to practice doing with less you will have the advantage of a lighter load from here on out.
On the trip, keep in mind that what you have planned may not be what your children have in mind. Years ago on a trip to Williamsburg with my niece, Lindsay, we had a very limited time in Washington D.C. While at the Jefferson Memorial I suggested we forge ahead to the next memorial. Lindsay wanted to sit on the steps of the Jefferson Memorial and just chill for a bit and take it in. I waffled for a moment, sure that the next thing was just vital and then caught myself and sat down with her. I also took a photo of her with her chin resting on her hands that continues to be a favorite and reminds me to pause in just take it all in.
Whether it is a family holiday or a trip to a nearby city to visit family or friends, show children who are old enough a map of the area. If you are flying, show even small children a map of the United States or the world as the case may be. Curiosity and knowledge are what you want to develop and engage and it is so easy and costs so little.
