Toy Story
Just saw Toy Story 3 with my family. Wow. What a message. First of all, I wept like a baby through much of the movie. Second of all, I think most of the themes in the movie are aimed at adults more than children so while I was choked up, my 5-year-old was bored. Third of all, I am torn about the ending.
SPOILER ALERT! If you care about surprise and intend to see Toy Story 3, do not read on until you've seen it.
On the one hand, I think that seeing Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang plunging to their near-death in a garbage dump incinerator is enough to make any child scream, "NO! You're NEVER going to throw ANY of my toys away. I've seen what happens to them and it ain't pretty!" There were literally children crying with despair in the theater during this scene. Yikes. As an organizer, I'm horrified to think that children everywhere will cling to their unused things so as not to see them realize a similar fate.
On the other hand, I love the FINAL FINAL message which is identical to the tag line of my business: Keep What You Love. Use What You Keep. In the end, Andy (now college-bound) realizes that even though he loves Woody and his toys, it's silly to keep them boxed up in the attic collecting dust. Your "things" deserve respect (even toys!) and a place of honor in your life, and if you cannot give them that, give those things to someone who can (which is just what Andy does).
Love those Pixar guys. They can really weave a tale. Definitely see the movie. And bring your tissues.
