DEVELOP A MAINTENANCE SYSTEM
Bonnie McCullough loved to volunteer outside of her home. Meanwhile her house deteriorated into chaos. Her husband started to resent all her outside activities because their house became unlivable. Her poor work habits started getting in the way of things she wanted to do for her family and herself. So, out of desperation she got organized. She even wrote a book called Totally Organized. In it Bonnie talks about eight new habits she developed to help her get-and-stay-organized.
- The five minute maintenance plan, which we talked about last week.
- Bonnie says; don't clean too deeply during your morning routine run-through. If you see a job that will take more than 5 minutes, write it down on a project list for later.
- Don't let the needs of others control your life. If you decide to help others before you've had time for basic maintenance at home, you'll end up resenting your mess, your lack of time, and your friend who kept you from getting at your work.
- Make your dinner decision early. You don't have to start preparations, just know what you're going to do and when you need to start it. It takes pressure off later.
- If you get the cleaning bug, don't start in the closets or drawers until the rest of the house is tidy. Begin with the outside and work your way in.
- Categorize your household items. Put things near where they are mot likely to be used. Group similar things together.
- Learn to pick up before the mess becomes monstrous. This is for each member of the family-especially children. After each play period and before bedtime, spend time picking up.
- Make the picking up process a habit. Unfortunately there are no magic cures for messy homes. It is a process that needs to happen over and over again. At first it will take great effort, but like all habits the more you do the easier it becomes.
