Creating I-Space

Are you in love with where you live and work? Part of Extreme Self-Care is recognizing that the space where you live (and that includes your office) is more than just a roof over your head.
Beyond the point of functional is the experience of being supported by your environment (fed). I believe it's critical to make your space soul-nourishing.  It should fill you with joy, feed you energy and inspire your best work and thinking.  Where you live and work both need to reflect the things that are important to your heart.  Then you're free to express your creativity in an environment of peace and calm.
When your space becomes cramped or cluttered you start to feel the weight begin to suffocate you.  Navigating piles and trying to cook, work, or just relax becomes frustrating and draining. When I moved into my current home the tiny fenced backyard was barely more than a patch of grass and an unattractive concrete patio slab.  Over time I transformed it into my own little oasis which inspires me year round.  When I need a change, I'll move out of the office and set up my laptop on the dining table so I can look out at the garden and the pots of flowers on the patio. In an instant I become a different person – lighter, more expansive.  My home is literally my sanctuary – a holy place.
The power of living in a space that feels fully aligned with your soul is highly underrated. From a coaching perspective it is one of the easiest ways to jumpstart your self-care program.  It's dramatic and impactful - which is one of the things I've enjoyed so much about professional organizing – its immediate effect on your quality of life.
I'm not just talking about decluttering or getting organized, although those are certainly a huge part of the system; it's also about the impact your home or office has on your emotional and physical health, your energy levels, your relationship to yourself and others and your spiritual well-being. Creating a soul-inspired environment is not a "woo-woo" concept but a vital one – and one that will literally transform your life.
A soul-inspired environment is a home or office free from clutter and disorganization AND filled with elements that inspire us to be our best.  A space filled with too much space and devoid of beauty and interest drains your energy.  It can feed feelings of depression, exhaustion and lower your motivation.  I'm always struck by the powerful physical sensation I feel when I enter a home that's cluttered and disorganized.  During the years I worked with hoarders, sometimes negative emotions from the intense clutter overwhelmed me so much I'd feel like weeping.  I could not imagine how this kind of day to day living was even possible to endure.
Like weeds that eventually take over the garden if left unchecked, we adapt to our environment – positive or negative.  Eventually this becomes our way of life.  If we're tolerating a home or office that's not our best, we're likely to tolerate other things that won't give us the life of our dreams – like poor health, relationships that aren't right for us or a business that won't grow, a job we hate.  How we live at home translates into how we live out in the world.
