"Killer closets can cause you to dress improperly and thereby destroy your self-confidence", says my colleague in Professional Organizing, Stephanie Culp. "…they can wreck your budget by sending you out to buy new items when all the time you have a similar item hiding in the dark corner of the bedroom wardrobe. It may be time to update your image by cleaning out and organizing your closet."
The first step is to commit to the task. Some simple decisions and steps toward this reorganization project will help assure you of success. Plan to do the entire closet in one lump of time. In this instance a bite here and a bite there just doesn't work. The problem is that about the time you finally finish it's time to start all over again.
Before you start decide what you'll do with all the things you won't put back into the closet. Make arrangement in advance with your favorite charity, church or organization to give your valuables too. This will create a deadline that will further commit you to this project.
Begin by taking everything out of the closet. You'll be amazed at the "things" that will show up that you thought were lost forever. If possible, it's helpful to have a close friend help you. One who will be honest with you about what needs to go and whose taste you trust. This type of friend will laugh hysterically with you at your letter sweater from the 60's or your miniskirt of the 70's, yet convince you lovingly that it's time for them to go.
A basic rule is that if you haven't worn an outfit in 2 years, get rid of it. And don't try to convince yourself that it'll come back in style-they always alter the fabric and cut just enough to make them outdated. One exception to this rule is for formal wear-gown and tuxedo styles usually linger longer than 2 years.
While you're sorting, tossing, and inspecting you'll want to gather those items needing repair and alterations and send them out today. They won't repair themselves just hanging around in your closet!
