Do you have those projects that never seem to get done? Consider this story from Alan Lakein's book How to Get Control of Your Time and Your Life. Do you see yourself in any part of it?
Ms. Gill had long wanted to make a needlepoint cushion for her favorite chair. She kept putting it off because she thought there were too many details to work out. But finally she decided just to start. So, she went shopping for the materials. She spent several weeks looking for just the right fabric and pattern. Along the way she met a sales person who talked her into taking a class on the history and technology of needlepoint. When she finished the class she decided only the perfect yarns of precise colors would do. So she sent for a catalog from a specialty house. Another six weeks later her yarn arrived and she was ready to start.
But, then she realized she didn't have a very good location to work on her project. So she decided to clean out and fix up the spare room, changing the light fixtures, building just the right sized table for her work. By the time she had taken care of every little detail, eliminated all potential hindrances, and laid out everything in great orderliness, she was so sick of the whole project she decided to wait until he felt more like making her cushion.
Moral to the story: Don't get so carried away with preparatory steps and unimportant details that you beat a project to death. If each detail is necessary, do your planning on paper so you have a realistic idea of what need to be done to accomplish your task.
Stay focused and just go ahead and make the cushion! Sometimes, good enough is best!
