TAKE TIME TO MAKE GOOD DECISIONS
In Alan Lakein's book, How to Get Control Over Your Time and Your Life, he says, "Your time is the result of hundreds of thousands of big and little choices made each year, month, week, day and minute, deciding what to do and how to do it." If this is true, then it's important to understand how you make your choices. Lakein mentions six possible influences that affect our decision making:
1.Habit. We choose to do certain things in a certain way because we've always done them that way. We don't think about it, we just do it, without considering if there's a better way, or another possibility.
2.Demands of others. Your spouse, your children, your employer, friends – others expect certain things of you. And a good bit of it you can't avoid! There are things you have to do. But you can choose how to do them.
3.Escapism. Sometimes you do things to avoid what you really should do: Like, watching the news instead of doing supper dishes. Having clean dishes would help get the kitchen organized. But there are so many, and you're tired, so you retreat to the den hoping the dishes will disappear.
4.Spontaneity. Sometimes you make a decision because all of a sudden you're inspired with an idea. A little spontaneity is good. But if your whole life is based on spur of the moment decision, I'm afraid you'll find yourself frustrated often. Last minute plans don't always work out well.
5.Default. Have you ever waited til just the right time to do something and then are forced into a decision because there are no alternatives left? Not only is it NOT the best way, but you're stuck with a plan you might dislike strongly!
6.Careful thinking. Decisions are made in lots of ways – and many are made with thoughtful reflection and careful planning.
So, how do you make decisions? Take time to decide what will control you!
