Sorting made easy
Last week I talked about how important it is to Define the Purpose of a Space before starting any organizing project. This week I want to focus on the Sorting process.
People hang on to stuff for all sorts of reasons. Some things are kept because they are of value, others because of sentimental reasons. But there's always that stuff you've got that you have no idea why you still have it!
When you're sorting, ask yourself some of these questions:
Did I know I still had this item?
When's the last time I needed this?
Is it beautiful, useful or valuable?
When you're sorting an area, have three containers handy.
- Garbage Can – this will be for those things you know you need to pitch.
- Dark lawn and leaf bag – this will be for items that you no longer need but you can donate them. You know why it needs to be a dark bag right? So you don't see through it and change your mind on items you place in it! And I like using lawn and leaf bags because they're large and very strong.
- Laundry basket – this is a handy basket to hold the items that don't fit the purpose of a space but they belong elsewhere in the home. Having this basket near you during the sorting process will prevent you from getting sidetracked and returning things to other parts of the home before you're all done sorting.
After your organizing session is done, take the garbage outside, drive your donations to a local charity and take items from #3 and put them away elsewhere in your home.
Happy Sorting!
