Organize Your Finances with Software

I believe the most basic financial goal is not to spend more money than you earn. You want a positive cash flow or positive net income.  Because tracking and adding these numbers manually is time consuming, households should consider using software to automate the process.  In the past, you entered all of your financial transactions into the software, and the software did the adding.  Now the software will obtain the financial transaction directly from your banks and credit card companies, save the transactions automatically and then perform all the additions.
In considering financial software, I look for products that will allow a client to categorize their financial transactions (e.g., indicate if it related to clothes or a vacation), report on these categories, and provide a summary report showing whether or not you are spending more money than you earn.
Here is a few highlights/lowlights for three software options available:
  1. Quicken for Windows for a one-time software purchase of either $29.99 or $69.99, Quicken will download your transactions, allow you to categorize them as needed and run a Cash Flow Report with a simple click
  2. Quicken for Mac - for a one-time software purchase of $49.99, Quicken will download your transactions and allow you to categorize them as needed.  You have the capability to build your own custom Cash Flow Report showing categories of expenses compared to categories of income
  3. Mint.com for free, Mint will capture your transactions and allow you to categorize them as needed.  However, while you can create whatever expense categories you desire, you cannot report on any new expense categories.  Mint.com only has graphical views of the data; there are no reports that you can print.  The graphical view of your expenses compared to your income is only against the 20 high-level predetermined categories.  Note, the software is hosted online, so it's available for PC and Mac users
