Halloween and Dieting?
Last week was Halloween. No one ever really talks about organizing that holiday. So here it is…Organizing Halloween 101: For fun, safety…and dieting!
Over the past several years, I've really learned to get a good grip on the season of pumpkins, since my daughter, Lexy was born a couple of days before Halloween. It seemed natural to wrap many of her party themes around that. To keep kids healthy, nix the idea of apple bobbing at a party. One year Lexy did a retro Halloween party (all those fun little nerdy games we did as kids) but we nixed the apple bob last minute when several runny nosed guests sat down at the birthday table. I also nixed the goody bag filled with candy idea (figuring these kids were going to get their fill of candy this week anyway) and opted for a 'goody gift' (a wrapped book, crayons and drawing pad, a travel sized board game, etc.). I think parents appreciate this better as a party participation token for their kids.
Halloween rule #1: Always buy trick or treat candy that you do not like! Why leave temptations around. Skittles and Blo-pop lollypops worked for me this year. Didn't touch one of them.
And, just as your kids were anxious to display all those carved pumpkins, Halloween village pieces and ghostly decorations throughout the house…rule #2: Make the time, soon after Halloween night, to send them back into their bins (labeled, of course) and back up to the attic. CLEAN SPACE is very calming for a dieter's spirit. This is one of the basics in my quest to drop pounds...integrating more clear space into my home and my busy calendar! And I didn't waste any time. That very first waking hour of November 1st (right after my husband left for work and my girls to school) I gathered every piece of orange ghostly decoration and packed them all away! It worked. The orange clutter is gone! No sign left of Halloween in my house…well, ah…except two big sacks filled with candy! Hey, a few small chocolates here and there are not going to sabotage my dieting efforts, are they? Well, multiply a few by several days and yes, it is enough to stop any diet momentum we've been trying to build.
So, the most important Halloween Organizing-Diet rule is to
hide the candy your kids collect from trick or treating. Chances are they will forget about the candy too. Or actually, better yet…sift through their candy with them (for obvious safety reasons), let them select their favorites for a one-a-day treat (hidden in a Tupperware container in the pantry) and simply toss the rest!
