TIME TO TAKE IT EASY!
Sometimes we feel like we have to fill every moment with busyness. Whether you work inside and/or outside your home, running a home is like running a business. And we need to justify our use of every second at work. Denise Dudley, co-founder of a management training firm, advises that we schedule some "planned wasted time" and "down time" into our schedules at home and at the office!
It's important to take coffee breaks, and once in a while, a long lunch. And, at home, Dudley advises that "you give yourself the luxury of doing things just because you want to". She says, "Listen to your Family Fun-o-meter." To do this, you need to be well organized so you aren't wasting all your fun time looking for misplaced items.
Start by setting up a personal space where you keep all your necessary paperwork organized. You may want to hang a cork board in this space. Pin up frequently used phone numbers, grocery lists, important reminders, to-do lists, to pay lists, etc. Write on your monthly calendar important dates to remember like birthdays, anniversaries, library due dates, change the furnace filter or car oil, etc.
If you work outside the home, schedule at least a 15 minute decompression time before you dig into household tasks. Try driving below the speed limit for a change! Use the commute driving time to unwind by listening to relaxing music, reviewing the day's accomplishments, and looking forward to the evening with friends and/or family.
When you walk into the house, make a conscious effort to slow down. Listen to your child's long detailed description of the time spent on the play ground or the school bus. Make the family dinner hour a time that reduces stress and catch up on everyone's activities. Make it a rule that no one answers the phone during mealtimes but you let the answer machine take a message.
And finally, try this stress reducer: When you go to the grocery store, don't look for the shortest line! Take the first one you see and spend time in line thinking positive thoughts, praying for those around you, observing others around you, or reviewing a Bible memory verse.
I don't know about your pace as you ended 2010 but mine was at break neck speed. I'm more than ready to take it easy for a change!
