GET MORE OUT OF MEETINGS
Do you spend a lot of time in meetings? Some people view meetings as a big time-consumer, but you still find yourself in too many meetings. So how can you make the best use of your time when it comes to meetings?
- Know in advance the purpose of the meeting. If you're not sure, ask. If the purpose doesn't seem to be worth your time, don't go.
- Find out about the format of the meeting and what you're expected to contribute. If you're expected to just sit and listen, decide whether the information you'll glean is worth sitting through. If only part of it applies to you, attend only that segment.
- Know what your objectives are for attending the meeting. You'll get more out of it if you know what to listen for. Again, if you have clear objectives, but the agenda doesn't seem to meet them, maybe you shouldn't go.
- Do what you can to get the meeting started and ended on time. This is especially true if you called the meeting. Start at the time you said you would in respect for the people who came on time. Late-comers are inconsiderate of other people's schedules. Don't "reward" them by waiting to start when they arrive!
- Participate in the discussions. Be prepared to ask good questions and make appropriate comments. This doesn't mean you should do most of the talking, but you will get more out of the meeting if you are actively involved.
- Sit in a place where you can see and hear well, and where it is easy to get involved in the discussion.
- Don't socialize during the meeting. Friendly conversations may be important to building rapport, but as much as possible do this before or after the meeting.
Take time to prepare yourself, so you can make the most of the time you spend in meetings.
