Über-Organized – Estate Documents

For most of my clients, we organize whatever paper and documents are available in their office, on the floor, etc. However, for clients starting with a good foundation of documents, I may present them with an additional stretch-goal: to collect and organize his/her estate documents.

When organizing estate paperwork we start with a recommended list of important documents, collect these required documents (some are not in the home, but need to be requested), create a summary listing of information found within the documents, and ensure safe and secure storage of these documents.  Your summary list of information can be turned into a Letter of Instruction – which supplements your will and helps organize and settle your affairs.  When a client gets to this point I consider then über-organized!

You can create your summary estate document listing using free downable forms, or you can save the information electronically which is easier to update when vital documents change (and they most-likely will change overtime).  The downable form can also act like a checklist to confirm you're collecting all the recommended paperwork.
