Straight-Line Tab Filing – Choice of Professionals

Straight-line tab filing is the preferred choice of professional organizers. The concept and benefits of straight-line tab filing for your folders was introduced to me by Julie Morgenstern in her book Organizing from the Inside Out.  As you see in the photo below, straight-line tab filing means all the tabs are in a straight-line.  There are three main benefits:
  • It is much easier on the eyes to scan tabs looking in one direction vs scanning back and forth when you have a tab on the left side, then middle, then right-side, then left-side, then middle, then right-side, etc.   Left to right quick scanning can almost make you dizzy
  • Tabs all in a straight line appear less cluttered
  • Biggest benefit:  straight-line tabs are significantly easier to maintain.  It is almost impossible to maintain the left, middle, right pattern when you need to add a new folder.  Adding a new file folder to a straight-line tab filing system is fast and effortless
Tips to Set-Up a Straight-Line Tab System
  • You can buy a box of folders with tabs in one position, or if you buy folders with tabs in all three positions, turn the right-tabbed folders inside out and use them as left tabs
  • If you need to differentiate between two categories of folders, you can make one category left-tabbed and the other category right-tabbed (see the picture below - note, if you can't view the photo, click here to see it on my website).
