LIFELONG PAPER PROCESSING
In the 28 years I've been teaching and speaking on time management and organizing, the topic of paper pile-ups has been "public enemy #1"! It's a problem that never seems to be solved.
One of the main reasons we have so much paper to deal with is that we are in a constant quest of knowledge. While seeking knowledge is a good thing, like most other things in life, we can go overboard in our desire to accumulate as much as possible.
This may come as a surprise, but one of the best ways to cut down on clipped clutter is to renew your relationship with the library. This time honored institution has gone by the wayside due to mass production of books and magazines, however, in this current economy I would suggest a renewed interest in it to help the family budget. And, revolutionary as it may seem, one of the fastest ways to conquer paper piles is to let go of the clippers and renew your library card…better yet, let go of your info-mania and chose only what is truly important to know. You'll be amazed at how much more time and how much less clutter is accumulating!
With this in mind let's talk about how to weed out the paper you already have and how to organize what you need to keep. There are several steps you'll have to take to put all of your paper in perspective. We'll cover a few today and a few in next week's blog.
The first thing you need to do is to OPEN UP-the mail, that is. As soon as you get your mail, open it and sort it. Throw out all the junk mail immediately. Next, sort the remaining into four categories: TO-DO / TO PAY / TO FILE / TO READ. Then, be totally informed and aware. Lighten up on the amount of information you're trying to soak up, and then don't feel guilty about information that is beyond your limits.
