Blog: Use Your Space & Conquer Office Workflow
Body doubling is an interesting organizing concept that I believe originated from author Judith Kolberg. In her book ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life she describes body doubling as having a person who is with you as you perform your organizing tasks. Having another "body" with you as you organize will keep you from starting a diversionary task, such as reading a magazine article when you're supposed to be clearing off your desk.
Judith Kolberg states, "the body double acts as a kind of anchor, anchoring you to your organizing activity." The most important role of the body double is to be physically be in the room with the person that is organizing. A body double is not required to provide organizing advice; it is fine for him or her to be quiet and unobtrusive. The body double can be a professional organizer, but it can also be a friend or family member who is patient, supportive and noncritical.
