STRESS BUSTERS FOR COUPLES
The baby-sitter's quit, the kids are sick, and you and your spouse have 8AM business meetings. Don't panic...you just need a few stress busters for couples.
Stress takes its toll on all of us, but two-career couples have pressures of unheard of a generation ago. So, what's an overstressed couple to do? Well, experts have some suggestions if you happen to be one of those couples:
BEGIN BY MAKING A LIST- A list of all the things that frazzle you. When your lists are finished compare them. You might be surprised at what you find on your spouse's list.
Now, divide your lists into categories of things you can change and things you can't. Make adaptations and then remind yourselves of the prayer: "God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference."
REVIEW YOUR BUDGET – Ask yourselves how much money do you really need? Maybe both of you don't have to work full time. Yes, it may mean that you can't buy that new car or go on that expensive vacation, but the peace you'll gain will be worth it. However, if both must work it might help relieve stress to log all your expenditures so you know exactly what's needed and expected and can plan accordingly.
SET PRIORITIES – This will relieve stress and tension when unexpected changes occur. Problems arise when reasons for a change are left vague so be sure to explain fully to one another as you make decisions because of the change.
REEVALUATE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES-Take a long hard look at work, family and outside commitments. Consider what you can drop, share or delegate. Be fair about distributing household chores and hire help if at all possible. Time at home is important to two-career couples and shouldn't always be bogged down doing chores to keep up.
