STRESS BUSTERS FOR WORKING COUPLES
The stress of two-career couples is unlike that of past generations. Unless certain precautions are taken it can be very damaging to the relationship and thus to the whole family.
Last week I offered some tips as suggest by experts to help maintain a healthy balance: LISTING WHAT FRAZLES YOU / COMPARING EACH OTHERS LISTS / MAKING DECISIONS FOR ADAPTATIONS / REVIEWING YOUR BUDGE / MAKING NECESSARY ADJUSTMENTS / SETTING PRIORITIES / REEVALUATING YOUR RESPONSIBLITIES.
Today we'll add:
CARVE OUT TIME FOR CLOSENESS-If you're always dragging at the end of each day, perhaps you could meet for lunch and plan days off together. Make exercise a regular part of your time together. Take a walk, play tennis, sign up for a dance class, whatever you both would enjoy.
DO THE UNEXPECTED-Everyone enjoys a nice surprise now and then. Think about what your spouse would really appreciate right now and then, just do it. "Surprise" means sudden wonder. Cause your spouse to experience that sudden wonder by making social reservations at that bed-and-breakfast you've been meaning to try or leave work early and cook that fancy meal.
Who knows, once you've reinforced your relationship to withstand the rigors of the two-career challenge, you may be able to handle the crisis at work, breeze through that rush-hour traffic, and arrive home to an overdrawn checking account and cranky kids, and still have enough energy to crack jokes to ease the tension you'd otherwise succumb to!
