THE BEST GIFT BE THERE!
Karen O'Connor's article, "The Best Gift We Can Give", offers wonderful suggestions on bestowing the gift of self on others. Sometimes, it's difficult, but GO OUT OF YOUR WAY.
When we manage to be there, in spite of inconvenience of travel, expense or schedule, we are often amazed at the difference our presence can make. And it's usually never forgotten by your loved one. Also, make amends.
Too often after a person misses a solemn event and begins to feel embarrassed about it, they slowly withdraw from a friendship. If this has happened, don't let guilt compound your absence. If you were truly unable to make the event, you can still go to the person at a later time. Your presence at any time will be welcomed.
So, be positive about invitations. Look for ways to be there for your friends and family not ways to get out of being there. In fact, GO OUT OF YOUR WAY to be there no matter what the obstacles may have to be hurdled. It will be worth it in the long run. And, if something has truly caused you to not be able to be there, don't be afraid to make amends so the relationship will remain intact.
Being there for others is at the very core of respect. When we go out of our way to make ourselves available amazing things happen to everyone involved. There is renewal of love and friendship. Emotionally and spiritually we are restored and rejuvenated. The next time you receive that card or phone call let your loved one know that you will plan to be there for them in their time of need, joy, sorrow, victory or defeat. It will be time well spent that will last a lifetime in your memory and that of the person for whom you gave the gift of "BEING THERE!"
