Why? Question everything!
We tell our kids "because I said so" when they ask "why" and become frustrated when people question our decisions. But perhaps we're doing ourselves a disservice by not asking ourselves "why?" more often.
For many years, I was on auto-pilot. Just doing because, well, because they said so. Who is "they" anyway? And WHY was I so tied to what "they" think?
Well, perhaps I'm just a child in grown up shoes, but today I question just about everything. Hitting mid-life got me thinking about how important it is to make the most of my time and energy. I began to re-assess and ask questions such as:
Do I really want to be responsible for all this stuff?
Do I like all this stuff?
Am I spending time with people I love and respect…and who love and respect me, for that matter?
Should I recycle?
How much time do I want to spend cleaning my house…do I want to hire someone to do it?
Where do I want to travel to?
…and many more questions!
Once I got the ball rolling, it was easy. I was so ready to "change my life" that the flood gates opened. Although it was a little scary because I was in unchartered waters, I held on and didn't even consider going back.
What changed? Everything. My shift was dramatic. It started with downsizing my home, then I left an unfulfilling marriage, I even started dressing differently, I went into business for myself, made more time for my children. This was all in an effort to become more myself.
Five years later, all the decluttering and organizing has paid off…not so much monetarily, but emotionally and spiritually I am happy, free and truly enjoying life!
So, are you feeling completely overwhelmed, too busy to have a chat with a close friend, or tied down to a life where you expected something different? Begin asking yourself, "why?". Why am I spending time having the same conversation with my friend who has no intention of changing her situation, why am I paying to dry clean clothes I don't even like, why am I reading a James Patterson novel when perhaps I'd do better reading a self-help book. These may not be the right questions for you, but just start asking yourself "why?" and you'll become empowered and discover a you that you didn't know existed.
