KEYS FOR GETTING HIRED
According to business owner and best-selling author, Harvey Mackay, there are four keys to getting hired. He ran a manufacturing company with about 350 employees and often did the interviewing and hiring himself. He describes the first key to getting hired as, be prepare to win.
Mackay explains that among musicians, If you miss one day of practice, you notice the difference. If you miss two days of practice, the critics notice the difference. If you miss three days of practice, the audience notices the difference. When observing a world class musician or top athlete, people can't see all the years of preparation that enabled him or her to achieve success. The Tiger Woods of the world have talent, yes, but they're also the first one on and off the course. This same preparation principle applies in every form of human endeavor.
So, in the job hunt, you have to prepare to win it. For example, before an interview call someone at the company you want to work for. Also call their suppliers and customers for more information about them. Call the university you graduated from to see if any other graduates work there so that you can interview them about the company. Ask a friend to role play a mock interview with you.
It's good to go online to find articles about the company or even to the library to look up any past newspaper clippings on them. Write a letter preceding your interview telling them that you're looking forward to the interview and why you feel you are right for the job and then follow up with another letter within 24 hours of the meeting. You might even want to hand-deliver it.
All these kinds of activities show how well prepared and eager you are to work for this company. It's not a guaranteed formula, but your prospects for success will be much better than wandering in unprepared!
