Use Personal Financial Software in 5 Steps to a Better You!

Is one of your personal goals to understand where your money is going and reduce your spending?
Leverage personal financial software (such as Quicken) in 5 steps to gain better control and insight to your cash flow. Once you have purchased the software and loaded it to your PC, follow these steps:
  1. Download financial transactions - from your checking, savings and credit card accounts
  2. Assign spending categories – review your transactions and confirm they are being assigned to the correct spending categories (e.g., education, dining, gas, insurance)
  3. Reconcile each account – confirm each month that the transactions in your software reflect the cleared transactions from your bank or credit card company.  This helps if you ever need to trouble-shoot a problem
  4. Review balances and cash flow – run reports that show how much you are spending in each category (e.g., groceries) and show your cash flow (money coming into your home vs money leaving your home)
  5. Establish budgets for spending categories– establish monthly or yearly budgets for spending categories that you want to track and let the software monitor how your spending compares against your budgets
If you need any help in these steps, purchase a book / help guide, take a software training class, hire a consultant (professional organizer or bookkeeper), or outsource this work to a daily money manager.
