Out of Sight, but Not Out of Mind (Actions)

Out of Sight, Out of Mind refers to the common phenomenon that if people don't see something, they think that they will forget about it. There are various solutions to this organizing challenge:

Leave things out, but in an organized way
Put things away with the appropriate reminders
Create a File Index for folders placed in your file drawers

Last week, I blogged about leaving things out in the open but in an organized way. The second option to put things away with appropriate reminders requires that you have a To-Do List or Action Item List. Ideally your To-Do List should be one consolidated list, not a lot of random lists floating around your desk. It can be paper-based or electronic. Many of the electronic options allow you to print, if needed.

When you place an item away in a drawer or folder and it relates to something that you need to do, add that action to your To-Do List. This way the object is "out of sight," but not "out of mind." Lastly, review your To-Do List on a daily basis.
