SOCKS!!!
Okay, this week I think this will be a little personal for me. I have had an ongoing battle with my children's socks. This is a particular area that I as an organizer am ashamed that I cannot handle. But, I have found a solution.
Having a 5 and 2 yr old, I have kept all in between and baby socks lumped together for more than a year I know. I have dumped the basket all the way out, sorted, piled it back in and repeated the step as needed for more than one solid year. I know every time I do this I say to myself I am going to take care of this once and for all. It is similar to the day I made the decision to purchase a flip fold. So I purchased a product called Sockpro Sock Holders, from The Container Store. They are small rings that have a tooth like inside that you operate similar to a scrunchy. They smooth over a pair of socks and can be washed and placed in the dryer.
For clean incoming laundry you simply unfold, put them together in the drawer and no more matching up socks
You do have to make sure that they are completely dry, which is a little time consuming to check in dryer, but I feel certain I can make the adjustment in my drying time to make sure they are ready every time. They do tend to snag any loose thread and it can become wound around the sock holder. This is far less cumbersome than searching for the mate and not having to dump the whole basket out each morning.
I was very impressed seeing them all together this Monday morning as I began preparing my week. So now, what to do with all the other loose socks that have no homes? Well, I have found complete websites devoted to what to do with single socks. There is even a site called www.singlesock.com. Who knew?
According to Reader's Digest a single sock can be used for the following:
Protecting stored breakables; covering your children's shoes when packing; polishing your car; They can be used as dusting mittens; placed underneath furniture to move a heavy sofa; storing work goggles; a wash bag for lingerie; even to clean plantation shutters and blind slats; Washing small stuffed animals; or even protecting a wall from ladder marks.
There are many products on the market that assist in keeping pairs together. I do encourage you to use them and see how they work for you. So far, my husband is on board, just forgets to take them apart and place the sock holder back in the laundry room. I think it will take a little getting used to.
