PASS IT ALONG!
Are you one of the many people who keeps glass containers because you believe that mayonnaise or pickle jars are "just right" for storing something else? Jeff Campbell, in his book, Clutter Control, suggests time for recycling to free up your space.
A better way to put those empties to good use is: recycle them and free up space for yourself. The same is true of clothes and shoes you no longer wear. Recycle them into the hands of someone who need them and will wear them.
Give books you're never going to read to the library. Hospitals and nursing homes are full of folks who will enjoy your old magazines. Give a call to volunteer offices of area senior centers to find out where to drop them off.
Jeff suggests you, Pick a number. He says, if you end up turning the house upside down looking for your favorite pen, then pick a number like four or five to save as spares, and give or throw away the rest. It's amazing how many different pens a household can accumulate. Does anyone even buy pens anymore? Limit the number of things around the house that contribute to overall clutter.
In the magazine department, keep only the last two issues of your favorite. If you save boxes for packaging future gifts, pick a number for them also and stick with it. Want a suggestion? Four boxes of varying sizes stored inside the largest one should be all you'll need. This rule is especially good if you have a passion for purses or shoes. Rank your top seven, give the others to charity (if they're even worth giving away!) Then, don't buy any more until you're willing to let some old ones go.
