THE PLIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS
Merry Christmas!
I trust you're having peaceful day today and that you did not experience what author Caroline Bonner-Thompson describes in her poem, "The Plight Before Christmas"…
'Twas the night before Christmas, on land and at sea,
Not a creature was stirring at home – except ME!
I tied on my kerchief and faded old rob,
Same as most mothers all over the globe.
My husband was nestled all snug in our bed,
Snoring quite loudly, with nothing to dread.
I glared in resentment, then raced down the stair,
With so much to do, I had no time to spare.
I said not a word, but went straight to my work,
Since Thanksgiving Day, I'd been nearly berserk!
My vision was bleary, I felt comatose,
Of holidays, I'd had a large overdose—
Of shopping, of trimmings, of Santa's of plastic,
Of cheese boxes, bows, and fruitcakes fantastic.
The waiting in lines made me feel like a stooge,
To sum it all up, I was cranky as Scrooge!
I hurried and wrapped as the hour grew later,
I rushed to assemble the talking Darth Vader.
I set up the train set, I plugged in the tree,
I jammed the tabs A into every slot B.
The stockings I filled, then tossed in a heap,
I truly just wanted to go back to sleep!
I tripped on the skirt and cursed like a sinner,
Then ran to the kitchen to make Christmas dinner.
I stuffed up the turkey with movements quite swift,
I hurriedly stuck and old wreath on the door.
I finished my jobs and collapsed on the floor.
A few moments later, I heard them get up—
The children, my husband, the cats and the pup.
They madly unwrapped; simply no one could wait,
I laughed when I saw them in spite of my state.
On Christmas Day evening, I plopped in a chair,
I looked all around and saw mess everywhere.
The children decided their toys were a bore,
They liked all the empty containers much more.
But—with a lump in my throat, I looked under the tree
And saw all the presents they'd handmade for me.
My favorite, by far, was the bright red new bonnet,
"We love our Mommy," was painted upon it!
So I know I'll go on and I'll do it next year,
As they all gather around to toast with good cheer,
"Happy Christmas to all, and especially to Mum,
Without her a Christmas just wouldn't be fun!"
