Blog: Moving, Downsizing and Organizing for Boomers, Seniors and Elders
What's a Senior Move Manager?
Most people are very surprised when I tell them what I do for a living. Their response is usually "I didn't know you could hire help to move." or "I wish I had known about you when I moved." Slowly word is getting out that there are professionals who specialize in handling all the details of a move, from the sorting and packing to the unpacking and organizing on the move in.
Basically, professionals fall into two groups, professional organizers or senior move managers. I am a professional organizer who specializes in senior moves. I am a member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO.net) and the National Association of Senior Move Managers (NASMM.org).
I stress the word "professional" because it means that I do this work full-time. I am bonded and insured for liability and worker's comp. I am licensed and I spend a good amount of time and money in continuing education to advance my skills and better serve my clients.
When you hire a professional who is a NAPO or NASMM member, you are assured that we adhere to a professional code of ethics and we meet specific requirements for certification. As with any service you are bringing into your home, you should always check references.
So, what exactly do I do? I organize and manage all aspects of a move. I meet with the people who are moving and work up a plan for getting them moved. I work with their families, Realtors or administrators who might be part of the moving team. I do both the scheduling and hands-on work for any pre-move prep that needs to be done, sorting, hauling, donations, repairs and even home staging. I assist in choosing the movers, I arrange for packing - either by the movers, packers, or my own team. I do furniture layouts for the new space to assure that pieces that are being taken will fit. I supervise the movers on moving day and I meet the movers at the new space to supervise the unload. For clients moving locally, my team and I unpack and organize the new space. My goal is make your move as stress free as possible and have you up and fully living in your new space within 72 hours.
