You're Grateful For What!?
Gratitude is one of the most powerful forces on the planet. When we're in a state of gratitude we attract more of what there is to be grateful for to us. It's like a magnet. In his book "Happiness Now!" Robert Holden, PhD. Says "Gratitude is a gift in itself. It inspires you to be open, to be present, and to receive. Gratitude is good medicine. One single dose of gratitude is enough to open the heart, energize the body, warm your bones, and make your hair curl…."
I have been practicing and living a life of gratitude for many years. As a life coach I encourage my clients to use gratitude journals. I understand the impact of gratitude on my life and the lives of those around me. On a good day I can be grateful for just about anything.
On a day when "life happens" and I'm presented with some bad news or something hasn't gone as expected, it's difficult to find any gratitude. Dr. Holden says to let our gratitude be unconditional. In other words, be grateful for everything! What?! Even in the middle of a crisis? Yes and here are three steps that I take to help me accomplish it.
The first step to open to gratitude is to clear the mental clutter. Sometimes this can take a while, but once I acknowledge, express, and release my feelings, it opens the space for gratitude to enter.
The second step is to change my view of the situation. "Help me see this differently", another well-worn prayer I say, puts the focus and responsibility on me, not on the person or situation. How can I change myself or my viewpoint? Right away I'm empowered instead of being the victim.
The third step is to allow the gratitude in by consciously choosing it. Say, "I choose to see the gifts in this situation." What powerful words! And they will reap powerful results.
Hidden under the crises, the chaos, the bad news, or the disappointments are the gifts of learning, understanding, forgiveness, healing, order, peacefulness, love, and joy. The only way we will receive them is to choose gratitude. No matter what the situation honor your feelings, change the perspective, and allow the magic to happen.
