There's Been A Shift In The Weather!
Snow has made its grand entrance here in Maine! We had our first seven inches of heavy, wet, white and wonderful "snowman" snow. I love the first snowfall. There's something magical about it when I'm watching from inside my cozy, warm home that overlooks a huge field and twenty five acres of woods bordered by a river.
On the other hand, it doesn't feel magical when I find myself outside, attached to a snow shovel battling the wind and cold! Ah, but that's just part of what you do here. I'm a native New Englander and I've become accustomed to our cold and snowy winters. We're tough in Maine and prepared for just about anything. My Subaru has sand, salt, weights and a shovel in the back from November to April.
I haven't always been this accepting of winter, however. For many years I was miserable from December to March until I decided things needed to change—meaning me! I knew I needed to find a way to "bond" with New England winters because they weren't going anywhere. It took some experimenting, but eight years ago I bought my first pair of snowshoes and I've been hooked ever since. Now I find the delight in winter just like I did when I was a kid.
A simple shift in attitude, born out of pain and discomfort, changed my whole experience of winter. When I stopped resisting the inevitable—what you resist persists—I was happier. All change begins within. Dr. Robert Holden, in his book "Happiness Now!" (soon to be on my favorites!) says, "…unless you're happy with yourself, you will not be happy".
What are you resisting that's getting in the way of your happiness? What needs to shift in you for your happiness to be revealed?
