Where Are the Bills?
If you have to ask yourself "where are the bills," this is not a good sign. All bills to be paid should be kept in one location.
When you process the mail, keep in mind that all papers fall into 1 of 4 categories: Action, Reference, Memory, or Trash. Ideally you should process the mail sitting at your desk. As you open each item decide in which of the categories does this piece of paper belong. For example, if the piece of mail is a(n):
- Bill – Place it in the Pay Bills action file folder immediately accessible on your desk. All bills to be paid should be kept in one location
- Action – Such as a party invitation or company asking you to become an affiliate, place in your Action file folder immediately accessible on your desk, and add a note to your planner or to-do list
- Reference – Such as a museum's calendar of events, place in your reference files located under or near your desk
- Junk mail trash– Place in the recycle bin or tray near your desk
- Unwanted credit card offer trash – Place in the shredder under or near your desk
If you work from home, as you process the mail remember to place your spouse, partner, or roommate's mail in one central location, which is preferably his or her Mail In-Box (or tray).
