Scrapbooking with a Deadline?

It seems a bit counter-intuitive, doesn't it? The words "scrapbooking" and "deadline" in the same sentence, just doesn't seem to make sense—on the surface anyway. Scrapbooking is a hobby. It's supposed to be fun, stress-free, and in fact for many, a stress-release. Deadlines, on the other hand, are associated with work, pressure, and stress. "I've got a deadline to meet!" You can just feel the stress in that sentence.
But deadlines—setting them and hitting them—are an important part of being organized. Organizing for scrapbooking is just the same. Deadlines serve a very useful purpose and can, in fact, reduce stress and make scrapbooking more fun. When you have a deadline for a scrapbook project, and you look for ways to hit that deadline, you have to let go of many of the things that might otherwise get in the way of completing a scrapbook project (or enjoying the process.) When you scrapbook with a deadline there's not much time or space for perfection. You look for the fastest way to get it done…and with that comes a sense of freedom. For me, the deadline and the sense of freedom from perfection the deadline gives me, makes scrapbooking much more enjoyable.
I'm working on a scrapbook with a deadline right now. The deadline is Thursday, the day my Mom, the recipient of said scrapbook, arrives at my home for a holiday visit. (Shhh…don't tell her. I want it to be a surprise.) I'm so excited to give her this scrapbook…and I know the things I would have fussed about in the past, she never would have noticed anyway.
My past approach to scrapbooking would have prevented me from even starting this project. My past approach involved a great deal of contemplating, shuffling, deciding, un-deciding, re-deciding, in a word—perfecting. (And wasting a whole bunch of precious scrapbooking time in the process.) But all has gone by the wayside, in part, because I realized my desire to "get it perfect" was getting me nowhere. The other big key? Having deadlines to hit.
Scrapbooking isn't about perfection…it's about expression. A deadline—self imposed or real—is a super-effective way to change your focus from perfection to expression. Ask yourself, "What is it that you really want to express with this scrapbook project?" When I answer that question, I realize what I want to express on my scrapbook pages has nothing to do with picking the perfect embellishment or getting the photos arranged "just right."  For me, scrapbooking is about telling a story or expressing my love. When I focus on stories and love, perfection doesn't even enter the equation.
So, set a deadline for your next scrapbook project. Make it real. Make it stick. Commit to hitting it. And see what happens.
You, too, may discover a sense of freedom in the most surprising of places:  a deadline.
Until next week, happy scrapbooking (and happy holidays!)
