Kids today have all the money!
I know it's not my imagination – even the evening news supports my observation. Kids today have more money available to them than when I was their age. Don't get me wrong. I'm not whining. But I think that with all that money comes a degree of responsibility that many kids aren't grasping.
To help your youngster manage their funds – whether big or small – try using the Three Container Method. This was very effective for my children and has helped them now that they're almost both grown.
Use three containers like frosting tubs. Cut an opening in each lid and label the containers: Savings, Charity, and Spending. Each time they receive an allowance, a pay check, etc., encourage them to put ten percent into the Giving to Others tub and ten percent into Savings. The rest can go into their Spending tub. This is a very visual way of practicing to save and to bless others before spending on oneself.
When your child's Saving's tub reaches $100, it's probably a good time to open a savings account at the local bank. Their weekly savings can still go into the tub – practice makes perfect – but occasionally make a trip to the bank to deposit into their savings account.
When kids learn at a young age to give to others and to save for a rainy day, they'll be learning important lessons designed to serve them well later in life.
