Blog: Just Do It… Finding The Motivation
A Fresh Start
We're on the threshhold of a brand new year. Many of us may be anxious to welcome the new year -- a new beginning. A fresh start. A chance to try again.
The blogs I write here at OnlineOrganizing are motivation blogs. Blogs to encourage, support, and get you moving. So with that in mind, I'd like to present a different perspective on the idea of a "fresh start".
As a "recovering perfectionist", if there is such a thing, I can attest to the strong desire to get things right. I love second chances and opportunities to start over. It's like I have an innate need to prove myself, or at least prove to myself that I can do it.
For the past several years, one of the top New Year's Resolutions is to get organized. There are many of us that see this as our chance to finally get things in order.
But here's the catch.
Is it possible we may be setting ourselves up for failure?
I can say from personal experience that when I set my expectations too high, I most likely fall terribly short. Even if I accomplish 75% of my goal, I see it all as a total failure! All I see is the 25% left undone. I can't see, nor appreciate and enjoy, the work I did accomplish.
As we face this new year of opportunities, let's see if we can be more fair to ourselves. Take a look at the goals you've set. Take a good hard look at your goals to be more organized. Have you defined them? How specific are they? Are these goals realistically attainable, given your time constraints and resources and degree of commitment?
Let this new year be a true fresh start for you by setting yourself up for success in the way you set your goals. Don't bite off more than you can chew. But set your sights on what you feel you can realistically accomplish and then GO FOR IT!!! Happy Brand New Year of fresh starts!

About Nancy:
I'm a mom, wife, professional organizing consultant and speaker, and a former Early Childhood educator. A personal crisis in my own life took me from perfectionism to total mayhem. I want neither. I'm now all about balance and being realistic about what I and my clients can maintain. My organizing business Real Solutions For Living was started to: 1) let people know they are not alone in their struggle to overcome clutter chaos, 2) to help them reduce their stress, 3) to help them gain back control of their spaces and lives, and 4) to offer realistic, practical, and down to earth solutions. I love what I do!
