Getting to Know Thyself... The Journey Begins today!
Tick, tick, tick….As my office clock ticks down the last few hours and minutes of 2007 I can't help but fall into a reflective, optimistic trance about the upcoming year. Yes, making and keeping New Year's resolutions is likely to be all the rage of writers, newspaper columnists, and bloggers over the next few weeks. They'll start pitching tips and hints from experts on how to loose weight, eat right, exercise more, and of course get ORGANIZED!
Not to be left out of the annual event I too have set resolution, or embarked on a journey of sorts, and that's to get to know thyself a bit better. Wouldn't you join me on this trip to learn more about yourself? Let's just see where this winding little road takes us, as together we seek out facts, statistics, and information (vital and trivial) about ourselves!
Fact #1 – Personal Credit Report
Our relatively pain-free, financial health check begins with ordering a personal credit report. As tradition goes, I'd normally start to chatter about the rules, regulations, or some fancy law that helps us consumers find & order their report. Since I'm in a reflective mood I doubt you are not in the mood to here that stuff either. Suffice it to say, our friends at the Federal Trade Commission have summarized the facts in one handy page that you can visit at www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/credit/freereports.shtm. I say visit the FTC only you want to know that I'm telling the truth!
Let's get going with a visit to www.annualcreditreport.com. Our first stop on our "Get to Know Thyself Journey" to order our free credit report. Don't want to order online, then pick up the phone and dial 1-877-322-8228 to place your request.
Why order/review your credit report?
As we journey to learn more about ourselves, I think one of the best ways to do that is to see what others know about you. Sort of feels like reading someone's diary, doesn't it? Well, expect that they are willing share with us.
A credit file disclosure, or your credit report, is your credit file as maintained by one of the consumer reporting companies. This valuable information is often used by other to make decisions about you, such as lenders and financial institutions. In a simplistic form, I think of a credit report something like my "financial report card."
A few moments on the website gets me one copy of my report buzzing off my printer. Yes, there are two more versions that I will need to review for accuracy. For now I'm going to order only one, sit back and review its contents for accuracy. How knows what I might find about myself!
Plus having only one report now, gives me plenty of time to add other facts that I'd like to learn on this "Get to Know Thyself Journey." Order your report this week and see what it has to say about you!
Happy New Year!
