Blog: Settling Into Your New Home
Furniture Remix
You've moved into your new home. Now it's time to play "shuffle the furniture". In a perfect world, we'd all have the time to measure, map out and plan our rooms before we even pack the moving van. But , this is real life - the children are running around, taking toys out of the boxes ("Mommyyyyy.... why are you packing this?"), work is calling and life just plain marches on.... oh, except that you're moving. Add that to the endless list and perfect utopia-land sort of disappears.
Once you get into the new house, you may have one of two problems:
1) the furniture you have for each room isn't fitting (either too big or small) or
2) you have too much furniture or not enough.
Sound familiar? Well, short of taking a power tool and cutting down your existing furniture, there are things you can do. Let's call it furniture remix.
An oversized sofa: It went beautifully in your living room in the old house, but it's swallowing up the new living room. Try using it in the basement or replacing it with a pair of chairs.
You've got too many side tables and not enough space to put them all. Try lining a pair of them side by side in the entryway. Put a basket or attractive tray on top to catch keys and the mail.
Your dining room table has too many chairs and won't all fit in the dining room. Who says they all have to go together? Spread a few chairs throughout the house - one in a guest room, one in the office or in a corner by one of those extra side tables for a small reading vignette. Need the chairs for the holiday dinner or special occasion? No problem, pull them back together.
You have no linen closet. Use an armoire in the hallway or storage ottomans lined up at the foot of a bed. An attractive basket set by the dresser or in the powder room also keeps linens close to where they will be used.
Take a look at the furniture you have an use it in fresh new ways throughout your home. Just because a storage piece or chair was meant for a living room application, it doesn't mean you can't break the rules and use it in a bedroom. Think outside the box a little and have fun. Your home should reflect you and your tastes, so mix it up!
