Blog: Setting And Achieving Goals
Failures Caused by Distractions

Everyone gets into a rut at some point in their lives.  Shoot, a lot of us get them quite often!  To the point where you are wondering when the city is going to come in and grade the road.  Lately, I have been doing a lot of waiting and I just realized that no one is coming.  The only road grader around here is me and I, for one, am tired of all of the ruts.

So I started looking at the "ruts in the road" and tried to piece together why they were happening.  The most common denominator is DISTRACTION.  Oh, I really abhor Distraction.  Talk about ruining a great dream or goal in my life and it seems to be getting worse as I get older!

I remember when I was in high school I wanted so badly to win "Best Actress" in Drama.  It was this great little ceremony and they opened the voting up to the entire school.  I was quite the little "drama queen" and nothing would have made my life better at the age of 17 to win Best Actress and get that little golden plastic Oscar on awards night.  Talk about consuming my little life!  Not only did I win Best Actress that year, I won it again the following year!  (I am still the ONLY person in the history of the high school to win Best Actress two years in a row.  Yes, my children agree, I am quite sad!)

I can say the same thing about my first trip to Scotland.  I wanted to go and it totally consumed my life.  I did everything I possibly could to make sure I went, had enough money to survive, and buy cute gifts while I was there.  Now, I can hardly focus long enough to get the kids out of the door WITH their backpacks.  What in the world happened to me?

DISTRACTION.

Life.  School.  Work.  Bills.  Health.  Family.  Holidays.  Friends.

What I need to do is FOCUS.

Focusing is a lot like working a camera.  First you need to choose the correct setting;  panoramic, night shots, low light, macro, should I hit the red eye button?  In our case, we don't want to hit the Smart Setting because we want to be in control.  We don't need the panoramic setting, because we want to focus in on a specific item.  Our best bet is to use the Macro or close up setting.  We want to zoom in and only get "IT" in our lens frame.  We want to make sure we have a nice clear and concise picture before we click the button and because we just can't wait, we take a quick peak at our view screen and realize what a gorgeous shot we just took.

That is what the view of your goal should look like.  Put it into focus, make it the only thing in your view finder, adjust it to make sure it fits perfectly within your scope and take the shot!

If you are having problems focusing on your goals, eliminate the distractions and focus in on what it is you want.  It will be a heck of a lot easier to obtain your goals than just floundering along a deeply rutted road in the middle of a thunderstorm!
