Blog: Just Do It… Finding The Motivation
Time Gadget Saves The Day

Stuck and don't know how to get going? Dreading the process? Waiting 'til you have a chunk of time to tackle your clutter?

I have the solution. No kidding! I have a sure-fire way for you to motivate yourself to put a dent in your organizing project on a regular basis.

It's a simple, easy to implement, anyone-can-do-it solution. In fact, it's been mentioned in a number of organizing resources including Judith Kolberg's ADD Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life (you can find this book in the Product section).

Look around the office or kitchen and see if you can find a timer. If you can't find one, go to any local grocery store or mart. They're usually found in the kitchen gadget section.

With timer in hand, determine a length of time you think you can manage to do (or tolerate doing) a little organizing. This might be 15 or 20 minutes, a half hour or an hour. You decide how much time you want to spend.

Next, set the timer for this length of time and get started organizing.

Now, a strange thing is going to happen. Be prepared to be surprised!

When you least expect it, the timer will go off. You'll hear that buzzing sound alot sooner than you think! In fact, you will most likely say to yourself "You're kidding! That could not have been 30 minutes!"

According to the rules of this simple motivation technique, when the timer goes off, you're off the hook! You're done. You're finished. No more organizing needs to be done. But we all know rules can be broken.

By all means, if you feel you've got more organizing energy left in your veins after your timer's done buzzing, then simply reset it. Pick an amount of time you think you can handle, set the timer once again, and off you go!

I've tried this no-fail technique on hubby and lo and behold it even worked for him! When your mind knows it only has to commit to a task for a short while, it's easier to conjole it into doing what you need it to do.

This is an easy motivation technique you can try that doesn't take a lot of time--pun intended--to implement. Try it today!

My organizing business Real Solutions For Living was started to: 1) let people know they are not alone in their struggle to overcome clutter chaos, 2) to help them reduce their stress, 3) to help them gain back control of their spaces and lives, and 4) to offer realistic, practical, and down to earth solutions. I love what I do!
